The National Defence University is being developed as a multi-disciplinary higher education
institution with responsibility for research, education, and societal impact across the Ghana
Armed Forces and other security-related sectors.
Institutional Development Path
The NDU emerged from the long-recognized need to consolidate and coordinate tertiary
programmes across the Ghana Armed Forces.
Existing military academic institutions obtained institutional and programme accreditations
from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, providing the basis for a unified
degree-awarding university structure.
Following review and recommendation by GTEC, the President directed the establishment of the
NDU under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023).
The grant of Presidential Charter on 19 December 2024 authorized the University to
independently award diplomas and degrees through its colleges.
Current Development Priorities
Supervising and coordinating tertiary education across the colleges under NDU.
Ensuring efficient, effective, and well-coordinated governance and management of tertiary education in GAF and other Security Services.
Building strong partnerships and collaborations with military and academic institutions locally and internationally.
Promoting a culture of excellence, innovation, and professionalism among colleges, faculty, staff, and students.
Future Growth Areas
Bringing additional colleges and campuses on board as the need arises.
Seeking accreditation to convert non-accredited trade courses within GAF into academic certificated courses under TRADOC.
Integrating Service Training Commands offering diploma and degree courses in specialist fields.
Encouraging qualified military officers to pursue PhD programmes to strengthen institutional independence and self-sufficiency.
