About GMA
The Ghana Military Academy is the premier officer-cadet training institution of the Ghana Armed Forces, located at Whistler Barracks, Teshie, Accra, and responsible for the professional military education and training of officer cadets for the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Overview
The Ghana Military Academy (GMA) is the premier officer-cadet training institution of the Ghana Armed Forces and is located at Whistler Barracks, Teshie, Accra. The Academy trains officer cadets of the Ghana Army, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air Force. Established on 1 April 1960, it evolved from the Regular Officers Special Training Schools (ROSTS), which had operated in Teshie since 1953. Before independence, selected cadets from British West African colonies received preparatory military training before proceeding overseas for advanced officer training and commissioning.
Institutional growth
The first commissioning parade of the Academy was held on 30 September 1961. In its formative years, GMA benefited from a Joint Military Training Team from the United Kingdom and Canada, which supported the development of military training standards and curricula. Over the decades, the Academy has grown into a respected military institution, producing officers for Ghana and several other African countries. In 2010, GMA celebrated its Golden Jubilee, marking 50 years of excellence in officer training. Since its establishment, the Academy has produced over 5,500 officers who have served and continue to serve with distinction in the Ghana Armed Forces and beyond.
